Conferencepic

The Kansas Law Enforcement Torch Run was represented at the 2009 International Law Enforcement Torch Run at the Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut by Bill & Lori Lovewell (Hays PD), James Browning (Merriam PD), Derrick Mahoney (Capitol Police), Mark Schondelmaier (Emporia PD), John Midiros (Shawnee PD), Chris Moore (Pittsburg PD), Adam Taylor (Prairie Village PD), Tim & Tara Green (Olathe PD), Shawn Farris (Leawood PD), Jeff Bragg (Olathe PD), Todd & Amy Martens (McPherson PD), Shannon Murphy (Lenexa PD), and Jana Fornelli (SOKS). Kansas was recognized as a Sapphire Award winner for raising over $250,000.00 in 2009. Kansas had another record breaking year raising $354,135.56 for Special Olympics programs!

The conference paid tribute to the hard work and dedication of Law Enforcement Officers for Special Olympics and honored the legacy of Special Olympics founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Guest speakers included Timothy Shriver, Chairman & CEO of Special Olympics; Loretta Claiborne, Special Olympics athlete; Kenny Mayne, ESPN; Susan Saint James, actress and Special Olympics supporter for 17 years; and Chief Richard LaMunyon, founder of the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Connecticut Special Olympics athletes served as emcees for the sessions. Delegates attended a variety of training and networking sessions gathering new ideas on events, volunteerism, community policing, corporate partnerships and more.  In 2010, look for the new LETR events that we will be implementing as we continue to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics!

Eunice Kennedy Shriver believed that “Special Olympics is owned by the future, not the past.”  The future is defined by all of us in the Special Olympics Family – athletes, families, volunteers, coaches, staff, and Law Enforcement Officers.  We invite you to be a part of the future for our Special Olympics athletes. Set your goal now to be a part of the Kansas delegation at the International Law Enforcement Torch Run Conference in 2010 at Long Beach, California!

Together we will make a difference!
